Wine Notes: Peachy Canyon Winery
Looking for the big bang of zin
"Last month, Josh and Jake Beckett of Peachy Canyon Winery and Chronic Cellars grafted more than an acre of vines on their westside vineyard to the 18 different clones. Peachy Canyon, along with Ravenswood and Ridge in northern California, are the only wineries participating in the research. Planting the same 18 selections that are already growing in Napa, the Becketts hope they can further the understanding of zinfandel for generations to come by determining which selections grow best where. The Becketts have committed to be involved in the project for at least seven years, and have agreed to absorb all the costs involved. They and their father, Doug Beckett, founder of Peachy Canyon, are thrilled to be part of the research."

Zin's Future in SLO County by Raven J. Railey
"Historically, the first zinfandel vineyards were zin blends," said Josh Beckett, head winemaker of Peachy Canyon Winery. "They were blends with mataro, mourvedre, counoise." Since the early 1980s, his father, Doug Beckett, has been making zin from Paso Robles grapes. Today, Peachy Canyon has 10 zinfandels on the menu. "I love zin blends," Beckett said. "I think personally a lot of them represent better zins. But I think there's always going to be people out there that want a straight, true zin."

California Vacation: Monterey, Paso Robles Wine Country by Ari Bendersky
"You'll be tempted to call this area Pah-so Roh-blays but if you want to feel like a local, just let the name roll off the tongue: Pah-so Ro-bulls. Sure, it seems odd, but in this area, anything goes - and that's especially true for the wine. Paso has more than 180 wineries and various microclimates, allowing for disparate grapes to grow mere acres from each other where on one side of a hill it might be blazing hot, but the other side has cool ocean breezes. This allows for a variety of grapes from Pinot Noir to Syrah to Zinfandel to grow and flourish. The latter is a star in Paso, being the area's heritage grape. Turley Wine Cellars produces some of the most acclaimed Zinfandel wine anywhere on the West Coast, and its tasting room is just a couple miles off Highway 101. But it's not the only one. Check out the lively Peachy Canyon and the award-winning Four Vines as well."

2007 Westside Zinfandel
88 points - "Deep red. Pretty, youthful aromas of red berries, cherry, licorice and smoky spices. Juicy and fresh but also supple and ripe, with plump raspberry and cherry flavors supported by gentle acids and tannins. Finishes sweet and smooth, with an echo of red fruit. Uncomplicated and very easy to drink."
2006 Cirque du Vin
88 points - "A Kitchen sink blend of petite sirah, cabernet sauvignon, merlot, syrah and cabernet franc. Inky ruby. Inviting perfume of spicy red berries, cherry and flowers. Tightly wound on the palate, although air brought up a deeper, sweeter dark berry character. Finishes taut and linear, with easygoing tannins and a light, sweet touch."

Paso Robles Zinfandel Recommendations by Lynne Char Bennett
"Paso Robles is one of the few appellations within California's Central Coast known for Zinfandel. Recent years have seen increased plantings of Rhone grape varietals, but Paso Robles Zinfandel has a following of its own. Proponents of these opulently fruited bottlings prefer the ripe, often jammy, dark fruit touched with spice, smoke and chocolate. Zin-centric wineries elsewhere also purchase Paso Robles fruit, broadening their lineup."
2007 Vortex Zinfandel - "Winemaker Josh Beckett makes more than half a dozen Zins, including this one blended from three vineyards located on the appellation's west side. Dark and robust with quite ripe fruit and a bit more wood; hint of black olive, plum skin and bittersweet chocolate. Includes 3 percent Petite Sirah."

2007 Old School House Zinfandel
"The Beckett family founded Peachy Canyon in 1988 and crafts fine wines from locally-grown fruit of several varietals. The wine offers aromas of blackberry and herbs with notes of cherry and toasty American oak. The palate is rich and flavorful with firm tannins that complement foods from the grill."

2007 Incredible Red Zinfandel
88 points - "We often look back with a real sense of nostalgia to the days when Zinfandel was a fruity, food-friendly quaff without peer in value, and this noteworthy offering is very much a link to that past. A fairly deep yet altogether easy-to-taste wine with a keen fix on berry-like fruit and sweetening accents of neatly placed oak, it eschews brawn and high ripeness in favor of table-wine balance, and it is an out-and-out steal in today's market." GOOD VALUE.
